First Cakes of the Month

My first two cakes of the month - I love the cute little Mickey Mouse Clubhouse
cupcake liners the best.

But this was my favorite cake of the two. My customer requested a small birthday cake for her cousin, who likes hunting. So I went with a soft pink buttercream, with dark pink piping. I accented it with a camo Browning buck, camo lettering, and a wafer paper fantasy flower brushed with pink lustre dust.

Dia de los Muertos - Sugar Skull Cake and Photo Shoot

While I love Halloween, Dia de los Muertos is my favorite holiday - despite the fact that I'm a white girl from Wyoming.

I love celebrating the lives of the people I've loved and lost.

I've always wanted to do a sugar skull cake. When I had a down week with no orders, right before Day of the Dead, I finally got the opportunity.

And never being one to squander an opportunity, I decided to do something else I've always wanted to do - a photo shoot with one of my cakes.

My friend Elizabeth Owen did my makeup. She's an amazing artist with a studio here in town. Click here to see her Facebook page.

And Philip Harnden did the photography. Another amazing artist here in town. We're a small town with a lot of talent. Click here to see his Facebook.

But I do love The Nightmare Before Christmas. So when a customer of mine called, this is how the conversation went:

Customer: "Can you do a Nightmare Before Christmas Cake?"

Me: "I can. I've done a few if you want to take a look at them."

While all the while, screaming in my head, OF COURSE I CAN!!! It's only my favorite movie EVER! Want me to sing you every single song in the movie, right now, over the phone??!!! Because I CAN and WILL if you want me to!!

Because, you know, screaming things like that at my customers might scare them off. Gotta maintain some level of professionalism.

No Love

This babyshower cake was done for a co-worker. I have to say, I like how it turned out. But I don't love trying to add chevron stripes to buttercream. That's all I have to say about that.

I also don't love cryptic orders taken by my co-workers when I'm not in the bakery. Orders like this: "She wants a liquor/party cake"

This is what I came up with it. She called later to say she loved it.

And lastly, I don't love Frozen. I love the movie, but I was hoping to avoid the Frozen themed cake trend. I didn't succeed. Disney needs to come out with a new princess movie. Quickly.

Tiki God Cake

I modeled this cake off the birthday invitations. Everything is edible, except for the bird, which was a souvenir for the birthday guy.

The invitation:
